A Historical Overview

The United Methodist Church of Linden holds the distinction of being the oldest church in the City of Linden, officially incorporated on September 25, 1866. The incorporation records are housed in the Union County Clerk’s Office in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

The church's first building, a former schoolhouse, was located on North Stiles Street near the present-day Knopf Street and was purchased for $1,250. In 1881, the building was relocated to its current site, on land generously donated by the Blancke family.

As the church reflects on its rich history, it continues to look forward, remaining committed to its mission of serving God, its congregation, and the Linden community.

As Linden grew, so did the church. In 1907, the church underwent its first expansion, and a new parsonage was constructed next door. By 1911, a gymnasium was added, which was used by Linden High School for a nominal fee.

The first Boy Scout troop in Linden, Troop #1, was sponsored by the church, meeting in the gym weekly. The gym also hosted Sunday School classes and other community activities. In 1916, a kitchen was added, and the building was equipped with electricity—though the parsonage remained without electrical service until nine years later.

In 1921, the church expanded further by purchasing the remaining property adjacent to the parsonage for $2,600. By 1925, due to growing membership, the original building was replaced by the current church structure, complete with a basement under the gym. At that time, the church’s membership totaled 161 adults and 412 children.

Throughout the years, the church has been home to a variety of vibrant community groups and activities, including choirs, Bible study groups, youth programs, scouting organizations, and social events.

In 1962, the church added a significant new wing, housing a large social hall, kitchen, bathrooms, offices, and additional Sunday School rooms. By this time, the church membership had grown to 490 adults and 295 children. In 1973, a new parsonage was purchased, and the old one was eventually replaced by a Memorial Garden, which continues to beautify the surrounding area.

Over the decades, the church has maintained a central role in the Linden community, hosting a wide array of activities such as Kiwanis luncheons, community meetings, rummage sales, day care, Weight Watchers, and much more. The church also supports several scholarship programs and provides spaces for weddings, celebrations, and civic functions.
